THCA PAC Backed Candidates Roll In RunoffsAll three candidates endorsed by the THCA PAC for the May 24 primary runoffs are apparent victors for their party nominations. Among the candidates, Republican Justin Holland eked out a 99 vote victory in his Rockwall and Colin County-based district. San Antonio Eastside Democrat Barbara Gervin-Hawkins won her race by a more comfortable 414 vote margin. THCA also backed former Killeen mayor Scott Cosper in the GOP runoff for House District 54. With all precincts reporting, Cosper appears to have won the race by 43 votes. However, his opponent has announced he will seek a recount after the State GOP canvassed the votes on June 10. Each of the candidates is running for an open seat. Holland and Cosper will face opposition in the general election while Gervin-Hawkins will be unopposed. The candidates in those three races were interviewed by the Candidates Committee of the THCA PAC. Committee members asked the candidates about their commitment to health care in Texas, especially long term care. The committee then made recommendations to the full PAC board, which voted on the endorsements. For the 2016 election, THCA PAC endorsed 12 candidates for the Texas Legislature. Provided Cosper’s apparent victory is upheld, every one of those candidates will have won their races. THCA President and CEO Kevin Warren praised the work of the committee and THCA membership. “Long term care needs friends and champions in the Texas Legislature,” Warren said. “The committee did a great job finding candidates who understand our issues and who could win their races. And our membership helped some of these candidates by volunteering and contributing through our PAC.” Members of the committee were Leticia Caballero, Chair; Toni Felts; Derek Prince; Doug Humble; Cassie Mistretta; Ron Haney; and Mark McKenzie.
