MORE LEGISLATORS ANNOUNCE RETIREMENT

With summer ending and an election year looming, some legislators are deciding it is time to move on.

Rep. Dwayne Bohac (R-Houston) became the latest in that group on September 26 when he announced he would not be seeking reelection. Bohac, who in 2009 authored the bill requiring AEDs be placed in nursing homes, narrowly won reelection last November in what is considered to be a swing district.

Since May, there are seven House members who have resigned or announced they will not run for their current office in 2020.  In addition to Bohac, those members are:

Rep. John Wray (R-Waxahachie)

Rep. John Zerwas (R-Richmond)

Rep. Cesar Blanco (D-El Paso)

Rep. Jonathan Stickland (R-Bedford)

Rep. Eric Johnson (D-Dallas)

Rep. Jessica Farrar (D-Houston)

Zerwas, Johnson and Farrar have all resigned and will be replaced in a special election on November 5.

Unlike the House, where all 150 members must stand for election every two years, only half the Senate faces reelection each cycle. Earlier this month, Sen Jose Rodriguez (D-El Paso) became the only member of that chamber to this point to announce he would not be running in 2020.

Most statewide elected officials, including the Governor and Lieutenant Governor, are not up for election until 2022.

The deadline to file for the 2020 elections is December 9. More announcements are likely before that date.
