Texas Continues to Make Progress in Reduction of Antipsychotic Medication

CMS tracks the progress of the National Partnership by reviewing publicly reported measures. The official measure of the Partnership is the percentage of long-stay nursing home residents who are receiving an antipsychotic medication, excluding those residents diagnosed with schizophrenia, Huntington’s Disease or Tourette’s Syndrome. In 2011Q4, 23.9 percent of long-stay nursing home residents were receiving an antipsychotic medication; since then there has been a decrease of 39 percent to a national prevalence of 14.6 percent in 2018Q4.

Texas began the journey ranking 51st in the National Partnership Data of Quarterly Prevalence of Antipsychotic Use for Long-Stay Residents.  In the fourth quarter of 2018, Texas now ranks 10th.

Also, the CMS Late Adopter Data Report from April 2019 shows Texas as third in late adopters.  Texas is only behind Delaware and Hawaii in the progress shown by late adopters.  Congratulations to the Texas Nursing Facilities.

Attached is the quarterly data from the National Partnership showing antipsychotic drug use in nursing homes.
