Senator Kolkhorst Honored as Long Term Care Champion

The Texas Health Care Association (THCA) presented its Champion of Long Term Care Award to Senator Lois Kolkhorst (R-Brenham) on Monday, October 12, at the Retama Manor South Nursing Center in Victoria.

Kolkhorst was honored for her leadership on long term care issues during the 84th Legislative Session earlier this year. Specifically, Kolkhorst authored and passed Senate Bill 914, which establishes a council to examine the survey and Informal Dispute Resolution (IDR) process in facilities and recommend ways to make them more efficient and consistent.

She also carried legislation to require managed care organizations continue to work with any facility that is certified to accept Medicaid patients. That bill, Senate Bill 1602, did not pass.

Senator Kolkhorst was elected in 2014 to represent a 21 county district that covers much of the area between San Antonio, Houston and Corpus Christi. She is the Vice-Chair of the Senate Committee on Health and Human Services and a member of the Senate Finance Committee.

Previous to her election to the Senate, Kolkhorst served in the Texas House of Representatives. She was elected to that chamber in 2000 and chaired its Public Health Committee from 2009-14

The award was presented by THCA Chair Mark McKenzie during the event which included a singing performance by the Resident Neighborhood Choir.
