Medicaid and Medicare Turn 50President Lyndon Johnson signed Medicare and Medicaid into law on July 30th, 1965, making last month the 50th anniversary of these programs. Medicare has grown in that half-century to cover 55 million Americans, which is about 1 in every 6. It has been expanded to include prescription drugs. It is estimated that 10,000 Americans become eligible for Medicare every day as the baby boomers reach retirement age. Medicaid, though receiving far less attention that Medicare at the time that the programs were passed, now covers 1 in 4 Americans (about 70 million) at an annual cost of $500 billion to federal and government. It covers nearly half of all births, one-third of children and two-thirds of people in nursing homes. Each program faces enormous challenges regarding their financial sustainability and delivery of services. Lawmakers and candidates for elected office must be called upon to address these issues so the needs of our most vulnerable citizens can be met. |
