THCA Honors Estes for Leadership on Long Term Care Issues

Texas Senator Craig Estes (R-Wichita Falls) accepted a THCA Champion of Long Term Care award at a luncheon in Wichita Falls on December 2.

Estes received the award for his attention to long term care as a member of the Senate Committee on Health and Human Services.

While it was Estes’ first session on the committee, THCA President Kevin Warren said the senator received the award for being “a steadfast advocate of long term care who worked to assist providers to improve health outcomes for their residents.”

“Senator Estes demonstrated a commitment to learn the many complex issue impacting skilled nursing care” Warren said. “His door was always open for us to discuss with him the best strategies for sound public policy that supports nursing home care.”

Estes, who has served in the Senate since 2001, said he was “honored” to receive the award.

“Ensuring that we provide the best possible care for elderly Texans should always be a priority for the Legislature, and I look forward to continuing to address issues in the skilled nursing care industry,” he said.

The luncheon was attended by providers in the area including Norman Mason, an administrator at Advance Rehab and Healthcare of Wichita Falls; Dennis Haus, an administrator at Midwestern Healthcare Center in Wichita Falls (a Nexion facility); and Marcia Lee Jacobi, an administrator at Iowa Park Healthcare, which is a Fundamental facility.

Estes is one of two senators to receive this award. Sen. Lois Kolkhorst (R-Brenham) accepted her award in October. Two House members—Rep. Richard Raymond (D-Laredo) and Rep. Four Price (R-Amarillo) will be recognized at events in December.
