Veterans Day is a great time to invite legislator to your facilityAs facilities across the state honor veterans for their service, they may find legislators happy to assist with their commemorations. Since President Wilson declared what was then called “Armistice Day” in 1919, political leaders have been active participants in events celebrating the contributions of veterans on this holiday. These officials like to associate with veterans and take the lead in thanking them for their service. With so many veterans residing in nursing facilities, many providers offer activities such as proclamation readings, patriotic ceremonies, and parties for their residents. When elected officials attend these events, it reminds veterans how important their service has been to our state and nation and shows that it is appreciated by today’s leaders and the people they represent. It also provides another opportunity for elected officials to visit our facilities and remind them of the value of the men and women for whose care we are entrusted. Facilities have welcomed legislators for their Veteran’s Day events in the past. For example, The Woodlands Healthcare Center hosted their local state representative — Rep. Mark Keough — last year. Keough emceed a ceremony at the facility and presented certificates to all veterans who attended. He later toured the facility and posted numerous photos on his Facebook page. THCA encourages facilities to take this time to honor those residents who served our country and to invite elected officials to these events. If you would like more information on contacting legislators and bringing them into your facility, please contact THCA Director of Government Relations, Scot Kibbe, at skibbe@txhca.org. If you are planning a Veterans Day event and would like to attract local media attention to the veterans you serve, please contact Rebecca Reid with THCA at reidconsulting@comcast.net and she will assist with alerting local reporters of your event. Event planning and community outreach is time intensive and as a part of THCA membership, we offer this communications assistance for your Veterans Day event. |
